Apple Pay
Apple publishes the list of banks and card issuers that support Apple Pay in each country. For the Netherlands it includes ABN AMRO, ING, Rabobank, ASN, SNS, Regio(Bank), Triodos and Knab; bunq, Revolut, N26, Wise, Openbank, Klarna and Trade Republic; and the card issuers ICS and American Express (Apple, Apple Pay participating banks in Europe, list dated 30 September 2026, checked 11 Oct 2026).
You add a card from your bank's own app. ING, for example, lets you add both its debit card (Betaalpas) and its credit card to Apple Wallet from the app's settings (ING, Apple Pay, checked 11 Oct 2026).
Google Pay
Google Pay (in the Google Wallet app) works with many of the same banks, but check yours: Google publishes no simple list per country. What the banks and issuers say themselves, checked 11 Oct 2026:
- ING: debit card and credit card, added from the ING app (ING, Google Pay).
- ABN AMRO: debit cards on personal and business accounts, from age 16, added in the ABN AMRO app (ABN AMRO, Google Pay); its credit cards also support Apple Pay and Google Pay (ABN AMRO, credit cards).
- Rabobank: debit cards and credit card, set up in the Rabo App (Rabobank, Google Pay).
- ICS credit cards (ICS, Google Pay) and American Express cards (American Express, Google Pay terms).
- N26: Google Pay is available in the Netherlands, among other countries (N26).
To activate it, ING and Rabobank share your name, address and phone number with Google, which checks them against your Google account to prevent fraud; after that, Google's own privacy statement applies to what it does with your payment data (Rabobank, ING).
Where you can pay with your phone
Anywhere you can pay contactless. For the payment terminal there is no difference between a card in your phone and the plastic one, says the Dutch Payments Association; what differs is that with Apple Pay or Google Pay you approve every payment with your face, fingerprint or code, where a card usually needs no PIN up to €50 (Betaalvereniging, mobile payments, checked 11 Oct 2026). Albert Heijn lists Apple Pay and Google Pay among its payment methods, and OVpay lets you check in on trains, trams and buses with a card in your phone (Betaalvereniging, OVpay). Which cards a shop accepts is the same with or without a phone: see which cards work in the Netherlands.
A credit card on your phone
A credit card in your wallet works where the shop takes credit cards; the phone doesn't change that. Every card in our credit card comparison comes from an issuer on Apple's list above, and the travel ranking sorts them on what they cost abroad.
